Take Care of the Young Lady

This month, I completed watching my third Korean drama series. The 16 episodes online of Take Care of the Young Lady (or My Fair Lady aka Lady Castle) aired in that country in 2009. I loved it and it made its way to 2nd in my ranking:

1st - Shining Inheritance
2nd - Take Care of the Young Lady
3rd - Who Are You?

The story follows Kang Hye Na, the only successor to the largest conglomerate company, Kang-san Group, who is desired by men while being feared and hated by women. She is the owner of the ‘Lady Castle’ and lives a ‘princess-like’ life with her servants. Until one day, out of pure coincidence, she comes across no-nonsense Seo Dong Chan, a former gigolo, who turns her life upside down.

One thing I've learnt from these drama series, is that love gets tangled in shapes like squares instead of triangles. Moon Chae Won was a familiar face in this, having seen her in Shining Inheritance earlier. Unfortunately, her role as Yeo Eui Joo was very similar in this story too; she was again in love with the leading male character who only saw her as a kid-sister. However, at least in this one, at the end she is not left all alone, but finds friendship (and possibly a budding romance) with Lee Tae Yoon, a human rights attorney who had initially been Kang Hye Na's love interest.

As with all drama series, there was a lot of crying and an equal amount of laughing. Scenes of Kang Hye Na doing community service and cleaning out the cow pen in the farm were hilarious. The developing inappropriate love between Kang Hye Na and her butler, Seo Dong Chan would tear at your heart strings especially since they were not allowed to be together until the very end! Because most of the things Seo Dong Chan did for her were part of his duties, the scenes where he did things for her because he simply cared about her made it all the more special (teaching her to ride bike, teaching her to make Kimbap, taking care of her when she got kicked out and when her grandfather was hospitalised etc). It took Kang Hye Na a while to realise that she loved Seo Dong Chan and only when she hears that he got into an accident (episode 12), that she puts all the clues (the birthday coupon, getting the loansharks arrested, calling him whenever she gets drunk or is in trouble) together and finally admits it to herself and to him. The ending was one of the cutest things as Seo Dong Chan carries on his shoulder a willing Kang Hye Na out of the airport, a repeat of what he did to her nearing the end of the first episode when she thought he was kidnapping her!

Take Care of the Young Lady is a must-see drama series and there are a couple of songs from its soundtrack as well that I really love.
